Coalition Government vows broadband facelift
Published: June 17th 2010
The national broadband network of the UK is about to get a major upgrade, with Britain set to boast “the best superfast network in Europe” within the next few years, according to Jeremy Hunt, the secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport.
Mr. Hunt said that the fact that 3m British households still find themselves off the broadband grid is a "scandal". The benefits of super-fast broadband must be there for all to enjoy, he continued.
Mr Hunt revealed that while the present government is going ahead with the “unambitious” 2Mbps Universal Service Commitment strategy of the previous Labour government, it is only the first step in making Britain the leading broadband nation of Europe.
According to him, superfast broadband is not just about getting things done faster, it is about doing completely new things. He hopes that it will create platform which will a new of businesses to prosper, creating as many as 60,000 jobs in the near future.
However, the secretary did not go into the details of the government’s broadband strategy, declining to comment on what kind of speeds the government will aim for, or how the upgrade will be funded.
