O2 Mobile Broadband has Best UK Speeds

Mobile broadband provider O2 is currently positioned at the top of the list when it comes to network speeds, Ofcom reveals.

Ofcom conducted almost 4.2 million tests to ascertain the speed of each provider in the country. The results of the massive undertaking showed that the average speed across all providers was somewhere between 1.5 and 2.1 Mbps. One major factor was location as speeds varied where coverage was not so good. Ofcom also advised clients to check their coverage and signal before starting a contract with a provider. Orange was the last on the list as it averaged the worst results of all other networks tested. T-Mobile got some bad results as well, and was situated lower, under Vodafone, Three and O2.

Derek McManus from O2’s technology department, said: “Our customers are seeing the benefit from the huge investment we have made in our network. We always aim to deliver the best network experience for our customers and these results are another indicator that we are doing just that.”

The fusion between T-Mobile and Orange, a project called Everything Everywhere did not wish to make any comments regarding Ofcom’s results.

Ofcom worked with a monitoring service called Epitiro and carried the tests between the months of September and December 2010. The test themselves were made by using datacards and dongles, but smartphones were not included. The latter will be included in another test the regulator plans to take in the close future.

O2 is also the proud owner of the lowest average latency as it beats the ones registered by Three, Orange and Vodafone. This represents another blow for the other service providers as the company proved once again that it has the best data packet transfer technology.

The chief executive of Ofcom, Ed Richards, explains why the tests were made by only using datacards and dongles. He said: “This research gives consumers a clearer picture of the performance of mobile broadband dongle and datacards as consumers use these services to complement fixed-line services or sometimes as their principal means of accessing online services.”

Almost 17% of the UK is now using mobile broadband connections and consider it to be a good service. If offers reliability and acts as another data resource which comes in handy along with fixed broadband.
