Sky Go brings free TV to iPad 2 and iPhone

The two new services from Sky, Player and Mobile TV, will merge to form a new service called Sky Go. According to the provider, it will be free of charge, and it will efficiently stream TV programs on any type of smartphone or any other mobile device.

Sky player is designed to permit the user stream the actual online link, while Mobile TV helps detect the device in order to access the video feed.

The users will be able to access the very same programs available on Sky TV: sport channels, Sky News and Movies, Atlantic, Arts, ESPN, MTV, Nickelodeon, National Geographic and Eden.

If the programs need to be streamed from a computer or a laptop device, there are 30 channels made available for portability. Although mobile devices don’t have access to the entire list of programs, having those 5 sports channels will help a lot, especially during the season. There will be more channels added as Sky promises to work some more with the service in the near future.

Sky allows access to the list of channels previously mentioned only within the country’s borders, but not outside them, as there are some issues with the rights involved streaming.
Those who own an Xbox 360 will be able to stream channels with the Sky Player, but the only downside is that the name will remain Sky instead of Sky Go.

Stephen van Rooyen, who is the deputy MD of Sky’s Customer Group, believes that Sky will take serious advantage from the exponentially increasing mobile market. He said:
“The explosion of smartphones and tablets demonstrates the increasing consumer demand for accessing entertainment and communicating on the move. We have already responded to this by offering a range of services, including live TV, across many new innovative platforms and devices, like laptops and iPhones. Clearly the consumer appetite is there, and it's growing. In responding to that, and to create even more value, choice and flexibility for our customers, we are now going to offer online and mobile access to Sky content at no extra charge.”

Sky has big plans for its new mobile service, and one of them represents having Sky Go on Wi-Fi network, working with Cloud. Those who are not Sky customers need to pay £15 a month.
