TalkTalk to provide Project Canvas with Broadband & TV deals
Published: July 03rd 2010
TalkTalk has announced plans of offering customers a free set-top box once Project Canvas is launched.
The internet-enabled set-top box viewers will let users stream video-on-demand direct to a television set via broadband, circumventing the need for a computer.
Max Alexander, senior director of the internet service provider, revealed this information while speaking at the Marketforce and Institute of Economic affairs annual Future of Broadcasting Conference in London. The recently announced joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva internet-enabled TV was one of the most discussed topics at the event.
A standalone Project Canvas-enabled set-top box is expected to be priced at around £200. However, TalkTalk intends to include the device as a freebie along with some of its selected broadband bundles.
Once the internet-based TV project with the Project Canvas working title is launched to the market, growing speculation suggests that it will be branded as "Youview".
TalkTalk is also expected to discourage customers who do not have adequate broadband connections from buying the new set-top box, as it will significantly hamper the quality of its service. This move will also give TalkTalk the opportunity to promote its faster broadband products.
TalkTalk warned that subscribers with slower broadband speeds, or those who find ISP resorting to “traffic throttling” will have difficulties in streaming content during peak hours.
