Halifax has released a set of home security tips after a survey from their Home Insurance Peace of Mind campaign revealed that almost half of us don’t feel safe walking down a country lane at night.
The survey, which was undertaken as part of the ‘Home is Where Our Hearts Are’ report, the second installment of a four part series that will be published by the company, also found that 86% of Brits thought it was more dangerous to be in a city pub at night, than an establishment in the country.
The insurance company published the safety list to show that there are a number of ways that people can make themselves feel more secure when at home. Property owners are urged to ensure that all doors and windows have secure, robust locks - with this being of even more important for those living in a ground-floor flat where opportunists can use unsecured windows as a point of entry.
Simple changes like adding gravel or stones to a drive-way, or route leading up to the house, is also advised, as homeowners should be able to hear people approaching their property. Security lights are another top tip, again to warn people of the presence of any intruders.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, explains: “Wherever the surroundings, people need to be aware of the steps they can take to protect themselves in and about their home.”
With an increase in the number of burglaries in the UK as the credit crunch hits, it’s a time for people to keep up-to-date with the latest security measures and home insurance offers.
