iPhone and iPad iOS viral video crash ‘prank’ and how to fix it

Be aware, a new and mysterious video ‘prank’ is circulating online that when played can cause your iPhone or iPad to completely slow down or in worse-case scenarios, freeze altogether.

The offending video was originally discovered by YouTube user EverythingApplePro and is a three-second .mp4 clip. A seemingly innocent video at first, but after watching on your iPad/iPhone device the iOS begins functioning at slower rate and regular functions start to lag considerably.

This ‘glitch’ isn’t restricted to a single mobile type or operating system and tests have shown that this bug affects all Apple mobile and tablet devices using iOS 5 to 10.

The video is most definitely corrupt, causing the phone to freeze and become completely unusable. The ‘memory leak’ fault lies within Apples iOS and how it handles corrupt video files. It’s possible Apple could potentially fix this in a future update, as the iOS shouldn’t allow the video to continue to use resources after playing in full or partially.

How to fix this issue?
Best way to fix the memory leak, is power-cycling your mobile device, by turning it on and off again.

iPhone 7 users: Press and hold the power and volume decrease buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

Other iOS users: Press and hold the power and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

When the logo appears release the buttons and your device should restart normally.

Back in January 2016 a similar prank was released when a iOS user browsing using Safari visited crashsafari.com. It caused the mobile device to crash, rendering the device unusable until it was restarted.
