An investigation by AA car insurance has revealed that potholes on UK roads are responsible for nearly £3million worth of car insurance claims in one month alone.
Claims of around £2.85 million were processed in February, all because of damaged caused by potholes. The figure, which is the equivalent of 1,900 claims, has risen by over 600% in the last three years.
Potholes have become more prevalent since the recent cold snap, especially on rural roads; this is where they’re at their most dangerous, especially at night, as motorists are often unaware there’s a pothole until it’s too late and the damage has been done to their vehicle. The latest figures may seem shocking, but according to AA Car Insurance Director Simon Douglas, the findings are ‘just the tip of the iceberg’ as it takes serious damage to make a claim, so it’s likely there’s a lot of minor damage that goes unreported.
