Virgin Media launches Sofa Stadium for the virtual fans

Virgin Media seems especially keen to please English Premier League fans at the start of the new season. It has already added Sky Sports Hd1 and HD 2 to its digital TV package, in addition to the existing ESPN HD, meaning that its customer will not have miss a single minute of EPL action.

Now they have upped the ante even further, with the launch of Sofa Stadium, an online social networking tool that allows fans to emulate the stadium experience from the comforts of their homes.

The service, offered free of charge by Virgin Media, is an application allows users to chat together in a virtual stadium during matches. The application is designed so that users can run the software on their laptops while watching the game on TV and allows fans to chat to each other, rate players and follow Twitter feeds on the action.

Fans also have the ability to post comments on Facebook directly through the application. Fans can also boo, cheer or sing at the click of a button, depending on how their teams are doing.

Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media said that Sofa Stadium is the perfect way for armchair fans, commentators and managers to get immerse themselves in the world of football in real time.

“Channelling their passion, sofa supporters now have a place to vent their spleen in a social space, instead of shouting at the TV screen!”, read the official press release.
